Friends are bragging about how good Secret Recipe’s cheesecakes are. They are even said to be award winning. When I tried it out at the 5th Level of Edsa Shangri-la Mall, it is indeed true. I ordered for a NY Cheesecake as suggested by Louels Aguilar, a pioneer of member from The Fort Global City branch. Although her initial suggestion was chocolate cheesecake, I had too much chocolate that day, so I’ll probably order for that next time.
Their menu are labeled with “award winning”, not a marketing frenzy but in reality had won international awards. This reminded me of Pantasia, which is an award winning bread company in the animé Yakitate Ja-pan. Aside from breads they have a number of main dishes originating from around Asia such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand. They also have pasta dishes with a little twist of spiciness to make it more Asian.
When I saw in the list Tom Yum Kung and Laksa I had difficulty choosing. I missed their authentic tastes that I had first tried in Singapore. Even 711’s there have Tom Yum and Laksa instant noodles would you believe? I was expecting my order to arrive in 30 minutes or more as people start swarming the restaurant after the mall’s Sunday Mass. After 10 to 15 minutes or so, I have my steaming hot Tom Yum. Wow.
Families start coming in with children… and a lot more children ordering pumpkin soup. The staff would tell parents the soup is a bit spicy, not the usual sweet palate of Filipino kids. But then, the kids will say it is their favorite and had been ordering that before so it’s okay. Good for Secret Recipe to have maintained a customers and little ones at that. Surprisingly they have three types of combo meals to choose from and each comes with alphabet fries. Next time, I’ll have that too J.
Back to my Tom Yum. It was good I ordered for Banana Yogurt Smoothie and lots of water. I am writing this a day after I dined in there and my ears are still stinging from the spice. I left the place literally with dripping nose as the authenticity of the taste was just like in Singapore. I even joked that I could have asked for a milder soup but Louels told me they cannot alter the recipe so what they do is add hot water to the customer’s request.
Now comes my cheesecake. Soft, sweet, smooth. I couldn’t say it is just another cheesecake that can be ordered from any other cheesecake store. It has its own signature that my taste buds will know for sure the next time if it is from Secret Recipe. Really, this reminded me of Pantasia but more in the context of fantasia. I started seeing stars after tasting each of my orders.
So if you are to ask me if this is a good place? Definitely. I even requested for a brochure so I can check the cakes and cheesecakes line up and try them all. And the lamb stew is so inviting. I never liked lamb but this is said to be a must try. The only lamb dish I ever liked was the one in Fullerton Hotel in Singapore. I tried an adobo lamb somewhere in Serendra and it still is a hit miss. Well anyway, I don’t write about things I don’t like so let’s end it there. This is blog is supposed to share the love and joy J. The lamb chop seems a big cut so maybe my friends Arpee, Noreen, and Dan can share it with me. It will be fun I’m sure.
Seldom would you see a restaurant whose menu caters to the whole family. Sometimes we misconstrue a family restaurant to anything that serves kid food. But here in Secrete Recipe, the parents get to enjoy authentic recipes of Asia, the teens would enjoy the desserts and pasta, and the kids meal can even be enjoyed by adults as well. Enough room, space, big tables and well-lighted, yes, it is a family haven. I’ll be back.
