Recipe: Bacon Wrapped Asparagus

Bacon wrapped asparagus as straightforward as it can be is just bacon wrapped around asparagus then fry on little or no oil (if using a non-stick pan). Use toothpick to secure the spears together. For a little spice, sprinkle with ground pepper if preferred.

Now if you have some other surprises to wrapped inside the bacon like strips of ham – fiesta, SPAM, meatloaf, whatever you like, just do it, the possibilities are endless.

Lucky Me Pancit Canton – Semi-Instant Prep

Every now and then a craving for Lucky Me! Instant Pancit Canton hits me. Maybe because it also reminds me of the happy college days (come to think of it, it was more of “nights” hehe) with my cousins when eight of us were still living together near the university.  During late night studies (really??? I thought we just “went” to school) and a need for easy to prepare meals, we always have the very reliable pancit canton on hand plus hard-boiled egg… Yes, it’s perfect with egg. Like Jack and Jill; Hansel and Gretel; Lucky Pancit Canton and Hard-boiled egg is just the combination to beat. When we got some extras, a bottle of Coke just makes it heaven for students like us back then.

With a little more time to spare recently, my craving for pancit canton made me prepare basic ingredients like baguio beans, carrots, onion and garlic… then something came into my peripheral view… Lucky Me! Instant Pancit Canton Sweet and Spicy. I already had the canton noodles but decided to use Lucky Me! instead (noodles and flavorings) with the sautéed veggies and a hard-boiled egg, it was just perfect.

Mer-Nel’s Chocolate Cake

When you hear “Mer-Nel’s” the first thing that will come into mind is the famous heart-shaped chocolate cake. University of the Philippines – Los Banos (UPLB) students will surely recognize this aside from the oblation in the entrance of this institution. A cake house located in Anos, Los Banos, Laguna, Mer-Nels will truly eclipse other cakes when it comes to the standard of sweet-loving Pinoys.

From a cake house in Lopez, they now have branches is Olivarez Plaza and South Super Market. I will admit that it came to my interest to get a franchise of Mer-Nels and put one in Metro Manila but I heard that the owners do not accept this arrangement yet. At the back of my mind, sometimes it’s still better for these businesses to remain with the original owners. Some of the products or establishments I used to love lost their magic when big companies took over and mass produce their once, or used to be, special products.

There is a new branch of UCC Park Cafe in Burgos Circle of  Bonifacio Global City. Together with my friend Abigail, who ordered Seafood Penne Au Gratin and  Blueberry with Banana smoothie, I ordered for my all-time favotite – Japanese Seafood Spaghetti Soup and of course, Coke.

There were also coffee bean and ground coffee selections by the door entrance, which are interesting. The place was cozy and was decorated in good taste.  Will definitely be back one of these days to try out some of their other dishes and coffees.

Cupcakes and Brazo de Mercedes, Redefined

The Sweet Life By Ange redefines the classic cupcake and brazo mercedes that we have been loving all these years.

Brazo de Mercedes aka Sweet Surrender

Imagine biting into a layer of graham with the creaminess of french vanilla ice cream mixing with the sweetness of custard… and the familiar yet different texture of soft meringue. This is the best seller of The Sweet Life by Ange called Sweet Surrender.  This is a true winner and as the name suggests, anyone on a diet will surely surrender just to have it. Too bad I didn’t get a picture, it was a favorite there was nothing left in a few minutes. So here is one photo from flickr (just borrowing, it really is visually enticing apart from the real deal)…

Price: Small Box with Ribbon (4″ x 8″) @ Php 365; Square Box with Ribbon (8″ x 8″) @ Php 650

Pho24, Vietnamese Noodles

What makes office lunches a time well spent? For working people like me, this is an hour to rush… Does it seem enough to enjoy?  Sometimes it’s not just the food that makes up this sixty minutes of break from tons of work load but also the people whom I spent it with. So for today why not have the best of both worlds right?  Have a good meal and spend it with a dear friend. Cecil invited me to Pho24 Vietnamese Noodles in Power Plant Mall, Rockwell and it was such a good discovery.

It has been a long time since I had Vietnamese dishes. At first I was thinking, “Oh well, what should I expect but spring rolls and togue (bean sprouts)… just like expecting siew mai or siomai in Chinese restaurants, maki or sushi in Japanese restaurants, or pasta and pizza and Italian restaurants.”  True enough there are togue and spring rolls, but they were not just togue and spring rolls.  This particular dining experience in Pho24 has given me a good impression of Vietnamese dishes.  It was more than just a Pho, which is thinly sliced meat in noodles soup or fancy spring rolls in rice wrappers.

Onion, Basil, Parsley, Chili, Bean Sprouts, Lemon Wedge
