Estrel’s caramel cake offers a taste of the past. How people enjoy their food then when there was no other luxury than fine taste on the dinner table. Established in 1947, Estrel’s is a part of history and still is creating one for the future.  The shop is located in 54 Scout Tobias corner Scout Limabaga, Brgy. Laging Handa Quezon City. There you will find a simple shop with cakes symbolizing extravagance. Putting their efforts in making their best seller not just taste heavenly but also pleasing to the eyes.

Every time I see their cakes, I always rave about the icing flowers. Where on earth can you find this kind of originality these days? Where can you find such edible roses in it’s perfection? There are a lot out there but none so far has caught my attention in terms of craft, art, and genius using a soft, yes soft, icing.

For my mom’s birthday, I was unable to order in advance (at least two days that is) for a layered cake or special shaped cakes as I was squeezed between work and events! I had to buy off the shelf and it was still perfect. Everyone in the party kept on inquiring where we bought the cakes.

There were people who came in with different cakes, in all shapes and sizes. We served them as well during the party on the buffet table and guess what, Estrel’s was the best seller. The next day we had to eat the other cakes or gave away some to our neighbors. Some of them even asked for the address and asked for numbers.

So for you friends, here are some details so you may also enjoy and have a taste of this, literally, food for the gods and godesses.

Julia Has a Driver’s License?

Look, she can drive.

Oh no, in just some few years she will rush through the door (with yaya in tow) and scream, “we’re off to my hit the road” — to that effect, in a baby language way, imagine Babyz of Bratz.

But I am a Barbie generation so with a pink mini battery operated Corvette, if I can find one, which am planning to buy for second birthday in a few months time I can imagine her roaming, circling, and buzzing around the neighborhood. Hopefully she won’t even dent our neighbors’ Mercedes or Volvo- real ones uhuh… hehe.

Julia is one of the very few kids around the block who bring some life into this neighborhood. Even the boys will just be sitting by the shadow of their nannies with snacks on hand and towels inserted on their backs, but Julia, she screams with joy or cries so loud you can hear her clearly even three lots away and it goes to a faint by the fifth lot.

Lechon: A Cardiac Delight

If there is any Filipino festivity icon, Lechon (or Litson in Tagalog) will be among the top list together with banda (marching drum and lyre band with majorettes), banderitas (colorful trimmings along the roads), perya (games and kiddie rides) to name a few.

Lechon the Tagalog way

Lechon the Tagalog way

I have this huge craving for lechon, specifically suckling pig, while composing this post because my mom will be celebrating her birthday and I will be ordering a Cebu Lechon, which I think is the best lechon ever. It is, as I call it, “sarap to the bones.” Although this line is used as a tag for another favorite of mine, Max’s fried chicken.

Lechon the Cebuano way

Going back to our suckling pig, as a kid, I was amazed how the oldies clamored for my grannies attention on getting the crispy skin. For the northern Philippines version of lechon, the skin is the tastiest part. To enjoy the meat, you either need to have a must-to-die-for gravy recipe or have buckets of Sarsa ni Mang Tomas ( local gravy brand for lechon). As said, it is a so-called cardiac delight. True, a lot of people are hyped and excited when there is lechon. Just make sure to shed off extra inches on the waist with exercise and oats for the cholesterol.

Other variants of Lechon are:
