Panciteria Lido is best known for its pugon roasted asado. Pugon isa the local term for brick oven. What differentiates Lido’s roasted asado from other pugon roasted dishes is the 60-hr curing of the pork belly using a Chinese 70-yr old recipe.

Reality TV still sells. Yes, this is the reality – from dancing, singing, to a variety of other talents. Until when these will sell, who knows… But there is still one that I’d wish to see in the Philippine TV.

A reality show on Best Inventions that will help uplift the quality of life in the Philippines where the winner gets support from corporate sponsors and government to mass produce the invention at the lowest possible selling price. If I’m not mistaken, a show of this kind was shown in the US before.

Our afternoons are already filled with variety shows and sing/dance competitions. Almost every street has sing/dance competitions to celebrate fiesta. Almost everyday there are videoke machines that can be heard in the streets of Metro Manila when it is manong or manang’s birthday from the house next door. These manifestations tell us that probably 99% of  Pinoys are either good performers or just love performing on stage… and so there is no need prove it further. Unfortunately, I belong to the 1% of the population.

Even so, having a reality show that showcases inventions:

  • present  a paradigm shift from being consumers to producers with the hope of rekindling the entrepreneurial spirit
  • change  from being passive to actively taking part in creating solutions to matters of social relevance.
  • give inspiration to people that we can solve our local issues if we set aside time to think for solutions
  • influence a new breed of young generation of inventors by maximizing the media resources
  • give opportunity to the seasoned inventors to showcase their products and their value to the improvement of life

As in any reality show, text votes determine the winner and as we see the result, millions from around the country contribute their support for whom they think should win. The money collected from these text votes may be used to help fund the project too. This sense of community, called Bayanihan, is a strong Pinoy spirit that will help us propel to a better nation and if combined with creativity, commercialism, and social responsibility, it’s worth a shot.

Coconut Milk Extractor

On June 19, 2011, in Food, by mylifejoys

This coconut milk extractor has been in the market for quite sometime but when my Tatay went here mid of this year, he was amazed at the innovation he saw in the wet market.

The coco milk extractor is mainly a press with jack, yes the one used for lifting cars to replace flat tires. The coconut in a “pisnet” (fish net bag) is pressed between steel until the milk flows from it into a sieve. This is then the ‘kakang gata’. Though the technique is still crude, it has definitely advanced from the way milk was extracted by hand and some warm water in the past.

Pinoy Street Food: “Adidas”, Isaw, and Balut

On June 15, 2011, in Food, by mylifejoys

Every-juan in the Philippines knows that finding these Pinoy Street foods is as easy as looking for a Starbucks branch in the Metro. In short, they are seen everywhere, in almost every street. There are so many Pinoy street foods but these three tops my list: Adidas - aside from being a shoe brand, is the popular street food chicken feet (Filipino translation: paa (feet) ng manok (chicken)). I really don’t know how these feet got the name of Adidas because when I was born, it was already called that way :)  Best dipped in spiced vinegar, this is a popular “pulutan” among social drinkers. Whether the liquor is the national favorite, gin or lambanog to the more urbane brands of beer or wine… Pale pilsen, light, strong… name it, the chicken feet is just there, beer and all… beside the “isang platitong mani” (one small plate of peanuts).

Isaw – these are cleaned chicken intestines. Doesn’t really play second fiddle to chicken feet, but some people are not just into eating animals’ internal organs. But before anyone judges this spaghetti looking street food, might as well try it first and who knows, maybe you’ll like it.

Balut or Balot – I heard people call it “duck embryo” or “fertilized duck egg”, whichever you prefer, just call it balut. ?It’s shorter anyway hehe. For some reason most foreigners are being dared to eat this ala “Fear Factor.” ??Balut is known as an aphrodisiac and is very high in protein and cholesterol. Oldies whould claim that people with hypertension should take this in moderation.

For those that are not comfortable eating or do not know how to eat this, I have some tips for you. All you need are three steps. Step 1: Knock it on a hard surface to open the egg, drink the broth Step 2: Put some salt or vinegar to eat the “pula” and the chick. Actual color is yellow because this is the yolk even if called pula which means “red.” Step 3: Close your eyes and just swallow. Then that’s it. Hahaha. Why close your eyes? Seeing the chick’s body parts might make you think twice to finish it. Specially when you see the eyes… the feet… hehe, just joking. The faster you swallow it, the better. The next time you see these foods in Philippine streets, might as well be brave to try them :)

American Idol Season 10: Scotty McCreery

On May 25, 2011, in Uncategorized, by mylifejoys

The aura of Scotty McCreery is that of what I’ve seen or felt with the great students leaders we had in University of Santo Tomas. These religious leaders that exude a light that is beyond themselves.

Having that confidence and presence in a stage in front of a lot of screaming people is best handled by preachers and performers who are born to do it. Whether Scotty gets the title of the 10th American Idol or not, he is already a BIG Winner. His presence in showbiz after the competition will give much credence to having an ‘idol’ who has it all in terms of spirituality, values, talent, and character.

This has opened an era of having a real icon for the new generation. It is my hope that he will be the counter culture that will help define and positively influence the youth of today.

What better way to beat the heat than a cold shake… Not just any other shake but Zagu Pearl Shake. Zagu offers various flavors and sizes at Php 33 to 54 pesos.

This is a drink that rocked in the 90′s but has endured the fads that come and go… proving that they have a loyal base in this tropical country all year round. There are several branches of Zagu in malls and groceries.

Why do I blog?

The answer – it depends…

If I were asked in 2008: “I blog because of my cool-new-friends-who-are-bloggers – Arpee and Khursten. So I thought, wow they are very informed people, knows a lot of fun stuff, and I like their crowd.”

So I never mentioned above that the reasons fall anywhere between being techie and being a great writer – because I know I’m neither.

Or if in 2009: ” I blog because of the budding interest in photography as an offshoot of my blogging.”

This interest in learning some better-than-basics-picture increased the passion to share the good things in life, well, in this case mostly food :)

So I thought, “Why not make the photos look better.” Well, I may not be an expert but at least my friends says so… hehehe.

What are friends for, right?

And forward to 2010: “By this time, there were comments from people I don’t know from Adam. People who thank me for the information, friends and acquaintances who tell me that they look forward to my posts and are happy reading them.”

There is more “seriousness” in my posts. I started asking the waiters about some information on the food I’m ordering or the cooking process involved in its preparation… etc. Hmmm, not really very academic but enough to understand food better.

Now… 2011, in this month of May is the third anniversary of My Life Joys. I’m asking myself… “Why do I blog?”

Lemme think again…

  • Makes me happy to share happy things
  • Develops a closer cyber relationship to my cyber friends
  • My personal interests seemed to be something in general, that surprisingly, there are other people who share the same interests
  • It enables me to experience, actively participate, and maximize my limited abilities in what this generation has to offer i.e. internet, new media, mobile technologies, etc., etc., etc…
  • A minimal income from some ads pays for the hosting and leaves few extras for my other hobby -reading – in buying ebooks
  • Makes my paypal account active
  • Oh my, there are a lot more reasons and they are too many to mention

The list may go on from shallow to mundane to deep and dramatic, but what the heck… in all these years, blogging allows me to realize my dreams. It also allows me to be a well rounded person. I can be a writer, critic, photographer, publisher, influencer, participant… again, etc.

Blogging doesn’t necessarily need to peel off myself and expose to the world the private details of my life but allows to me still share the person that I am.

It is my hope that my blog brings you the same joy as it gives me. Thank you for the followers of My Life Joys. In this new year, I hope to share more thru WordPress for Blackberry. Moving around and blogging about in a more timely manner… something short but sweet.

And to my family and friends who support me… for understanding and accepting that I should take pictures of our food before eating, THANK YOU so much. :)
