Binondo: Dong Bei – Kuchay Dumplings and More

What is Chinatown without dumplings? It is like an ocean without fishes, a Coke without ice, or a cell phone without a signal.

In Binondo, there is a place called Dong Bei (along Yuchengo St. at the back of Binondo Church) where you get to enjoy dumplings specially their kuchay (chives) dumplings. The wrapper is freshly prepared everyday right in the entrance of this small food haven. Even my Mom enjoyed the kuchay dumplings and our cook, Ate Myra too- who at time becomes a food critic as she herself knows her way around the kitchen.

Binondo: Sincerity Chicken

What is a Binondo trip without tasting the chicken from Sincerity? It is definitely a must try. At first, I was thinking, why should I order chicken when after all this can be ordered from anywhere even in fast food chains. Well, you should go to try it. Crispy in the outside soft and flavorful in the inside.

For around P500~800 (U$10~12) a group of 2-3 persons can share a feast of rice, half order chicken, chopsuey (strir fried mixed veggies), oyster cake, fresh lumpia (vegetable roll), and 2 orders of kikiam.

     As part of our family weekend Binondo tour, a visit to Eng Bee Tin, the famous hopia and tikoy store who with its success has purple fire trucks in its name. These fire trucks are donation to the community that was a witness to their over ninety years of existence. From the time the business was starting to its present stature of success.

     Located in Ongpin, you will never miss their purple signage and a mass of people going in and out of their stores at any time of the day. The name Eng Bee Tin is synonymous to freshness and excellent products in their line. Famous for their Ube Hopia (Purple Yam flavored bean-filled pastry), they did not stop in this successful flavor but continued to innovate and go with the changing demands of their customers. Now, they also have hopia with Splenda for the diabetics and ready to eat tikoy (glutinous rice) aside from the classic tikoy that needs to be fried.

     Even before there was Makati and Ortigas Business Districts, Binondo or Chinatown was the business center in Manila. Located along the Pasig River, this place was the center of commerce even before the Spanish regime.
    
     A main historical site, the Binondo Church stands as the long witness to the rich history of catholic Filipino-Chinese or Chinoys. This is also the birthplace of the first Filipino saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz.
